Today, it’s getting batty…and catty. It’s the sixth edition of Minute Momentary Mind Insights and as per usual, I am exploring some philosophical notions in pop culture: this time, that contained within Tim Burton’s gothic Batman Returns.
The specific quote is derived from Danni DeVito’s incarnation of the Penguin:
“You’re just jealous cause I’m a genuine freak and you have to wear a mask!” – Oswald Cobble-pot A.K.A. The Penguin
This idea of masks and the ‘freak’ identity associated with super heroics, is extremely philosophical as presented in the above quote, as it poses the notion that the villain is more comfortable in confronting his own truths and twisted justice, as opposed to the hero, who hides behind a mask; for fear of harm and prosecution from the very people he protects. Further, this ideology can span to encompass the thought that society is more comfortable with known threats and those that a clearly black or white. As Batman falls into the somewhat morally grey category and is at times, on the wrong side of the law, his rogues gallery of villains can appear more appealing due to their obvious intentions and unhidden facets, firearms and faces.
