Many of our world’s most noteworthy successes were ironically put down and underestimated when they were first starting out.
To name a few: Albert Einstein -one of physic’s most famous personalities and Nobel Prize winner- was told he would never amount to much, Michael Jordan -a world-renowned basket-baller- was never accepted into his high school basketball team, visionary animator and winner of 22 Academy Awards, Walt Disney, was fired from a newspaper firm for apparently ‘having no originality and lacking imagination’.
How horribly wrong their haters were.
It seems today, in an Internet-ridden world running 24/7, our generation is copping a mass of hatred, negativity and abuse from misinterpreted messages, cruel comments and a never-ending supply of online trolls, who critique every small imperfection and uniqueness a person could possess. But is this good or bad? While criticism can be both cruel and constructive, it is all about how it is interpreted. The problem is that the ability to criticise and retaliate at the instantaneous touch of a button, is now allowing people to spend less time thinking and more time worrying, weeping and warring over any sort of criticism: intended to be taken for good or ill.
Criticism can be an exceptional motivator and character builder. After all, it is from our failures that we learn, and when we have someone to point out these failures, it allows us to grow. Not everyone will agree with or admire you, and learning how to deal with negative feedback is an important life skill. Because of such a supply of this negativity, our generation seems to be losing their resilience and giving in to the haters.
But there is a solution… and it’s more than just getting a thick skin. You can take a detox or break from social media (shout out to Ed Sheeran), talk to people about things and not take the dislike to heart or too seriously…after all everyone online talks differently than in real life.
